Students competing in the Elementary Division (K-5) do not need to complete all of the ISEF paperwork.  However, they will still need to abide by ISEF rules for the safety of the investigator and all participants.   All projects will need to obtain Adult Sponsor (teacher) and Parent/Guardian approval before research begins.  Projects involving human participants, vertebrate animals, potentially hazardous biological agents, or hazardous substances and devices will require SRC/IRB approval before research begins.

Fair Time Line

February 18, 2022 Regional Fair Registration Due.  All required forms (Registration and Elementary Research Plan), project PDF file, 2-minute Video, and Quad-chart submitted by e-mail to Fair Director (  Any optional items (Video Demonstration, Report Paper, Notebook Excerpts) that you wish to be shown on the fair website must be submitted.
March 1-4, 2022 Judging appoints will be set up and sent to project contact e-mails before February 25th.

Judging interviews will be held during the week of March 1-4.  

March 5, 2022 6:00 – 7:00 PM
Awards Ceremony via Zoom.Link will be placed on the main fair webpage.  



Submitting Paperwork for SRC Approval

If your project requires SRC approval before research, please e-mail a copy of the completed forms:

  • 2022 Research Plan – Grades K-5 with attached Project Description
  • Form 3:  Risk Assessment Form
  • Form 6A (if required)

to Dr. Michael Ottinger (  The SRC will review your plan and respond to you within one week.   If your plan is approved, the SRC will return the forms to you (or your Adult Sponsor) by e-mail.  If it is not approved, the SRC will explain what changes you need to make before approval can be granted.  When the changes are made, you may resubmit the forms for approval.   If you have questions about this process, please check with your Adult Sponsor (teacher) or contact Dr. Ottinger at the above e-mail address.
